At the start of 2026, good news was announced from Roc Oil’s Weizhou 10-3 West Oilfield Development Project in the Beibu Gulf of the South China Sea:Two of the first batch of development wells in the project have achieved complete success by optimizing well trajectory design and giving priority to the drilling of appraisal-oriented pilot wells. These pilot wells have carried out progressive boundary evaluation on unproven fault blocks explored by wildcat wells, with both wells encountering thick oil layers, marking a strong start for the company in 2026.

The Weizhou 10?3 West Oilfield Development Project is a typical complex fault?block oilfield, featuring challenges including rapid reservoir changes, scattered reserves, high drilling difficulty, and relatively high development costs. To achieve high?quality development, during the pre?drilling optimization phase before formal drilling and completion operations, the joint technical team formed by Roc Oil and CNOOC drew on preliminary geological, reservoir, drilling and completion research results. Leveraging advanced 3D seismic data reprocessing and fine reservoir characterization technologies, the team concluded through research and analysis that multiple unproven fault blocks had potential for hydrocarbon charging and contiguous hydrocarbon distribution.Following several rounds of detailed evaluation, two high?potential fault blocks were selected as appraisal targets, and nearby development wells were optimized into dual?purpose pilot wells for both appraisal and production to be implemented first.
The two pilot wells drilled this time are tasked not only with reserve increase and production expansion, but also with the important mission of optimizing the overall development well pattern for the later stage. During drilling, the geological and reservoir team worked closely with the drilling team, giving full play to the technological advantages of integrated geoscience and engineering. This effectively ensured precise control of well trajectories and significantly improved reservoir penetration rate and drilling efficiency.
The success of both pilot wells has validated the scientific demonstration and forward?looking judgment of the pre?drilling team on hydrocarbon charging, and further deepened the understanding of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation theories in complex fault?block reservoirs in this area. More importantly, the geological and engineering data obtained in advance from the pilot wells provide an important basis for the implementation of the remaining development wells and the optimization and adjustment of the full?field development plan. This will significantly increase the geological and recoverable reserves of the oilfield and effectively improve the economic viability of the project.
The success of the two pilot wells represents another win?win cooperation case between Roc Oil and its partners, including CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch, Wisdom Petroleum, CNOOC Research Institute, and the drilling and completion team of China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL). It has greatly strengthened the confidence and determination of the project development team in pursuing high?quality, cost?effective development of the oilfield. Currently, drilling and completion operations of the project are progressing steadily, while offshore operations are being carried out efficiently in parallel.Platform towing, offshore installation and joint commissioning will be carried out in an orderly manner. All partners are going all out to strive for the full commissioning of the oilfield.
Going forward, the joint geological and reservoir team of the project will further conduct appraisal of other unproven fault blocks and formulate future development adjustment plans. The team will continue to tap into reservoir potential to achieve greater goals in reserve growth and production expansion, maximize benefits for all partners, and provide solid support for boosting production in oilfields in the western South China Sea.
